The harbour is built on the site of a medieval quay first established in 1430. The inner harbour, consisting of the current East and West Quays was constructed from 1774 and an outer harbour wall was added in 1888, damaged in 1891 then rebuilt in 1897.
Today, Mevagissey is the second largest fishing port in Cornwall.
