Ajuy was the place where the Canary Islands conqueror, Jean de Béthencourt of Normandy France, landed in the early fifteenth century and took Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and El Hierro. He became the Lord of the Canary Islands with the approval of King Henry III and founded the former capital town of Betancuria.
In 1994 Ajuy was declared a Natural Monument and included in the Betancuria Rural Park situated in the municipality of Pajara. The place is of paleontological and geological significance where scientists found some of the oldest materials found on the Canary Islands
