The windmill is one of several on the island but has the distinction of having six sails whereas most on the island only have 4. It stands just outside the night sky observatory located at the village of Tefia in the northern part of the island.

The wooden top of the windmill can rotate and the sails are moved into the wind by using the very long pole coming down to the ground.

Fuerteventura’s night sky has been officially designated a Starlight Reserve which is a recognition of the island’s exceptional night sky conditions as one of the best places to view stars without the interference of light pollution. A Starlight Reserve is a concept created in 2007, in cooperation with UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre, to reference places that are committed to preserve the quality of the night sky for visiting astronomers.
