Dinan with its medieval history is situated on a hillside overlooking the River Rance and is encircled by its 2.7 kilometre long castle ramparts, a large section of which can be walked round.
The Rue de la Larderie is one of the lanes that housed the craftsmen of medieval times and relates to the meat sellers that existed here. Other streets were named after other medieval trades such as Rue de la Poissonnerie (fishmongers), Rue de la Ferronnerie (iron-mongers), Rue de la Mittrie (dairy) and Rue du Petit-Pain (bakers). All these small streets come together at the Place Saint Sauveur.
