Polperro has existed since medieval times and as early as the 13th century, Polperro was a recognised fishing settlement. Smuggling is understood to have prospered since Polperro developed as a port in the 12th century and reached its highest during the late 18th century due to high taxation of many imported goods. Tourism became Polperro’s main industry during the 20th century.
