The castle is the largest medieval fortress in Europe. It has 11 towers and and 3 enclosures and was first classified as an historical monument in 1862. It was timber built in the 11th century, later taken by Henry II of England and destroyed. It was rebuilt in stone and became a stronghold to defend the borders of Brittany. The creation of the town of Fougères dates back to the Middle Ages. It is situated on a high point looking over the Nançon River, strategic importance during medieval times defending the frontier between France and Brittany.
