The history of Mont Saint Michel began in 708AD, built on a rocky island at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches, France on the border between Normandy and Brittany, connected by a tidal causeway to the mainland. In 966AD, Benedictine monks arrived and were responsible for the growth of a new monastery. Used as a prison from 1793 to 1863 and fell into disrepair. In 1874, the Abbey was classified as a historical monument and restoration began which continues to this day. Over 60 buildings within the commune are protected in France as historical monuments. Mont Saint Michel and its surrounding bay were inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979.
